Incoming: House finale

Bye, House!

England’s very own Hugh Laurie will finally hang up his cane as Dr Gregory House in the series finale of FOX stalwart ‘House’ this Thursday on Sky One. The 22nd, and final, episode, entitled ‘Everybody Dies’, will see a number of familiar faces return in some capacity, including even Kal Penn who portrayed the nerdy Lawrence Kutner in series 4 and 5.

The road to finale has been a long one which, arguably, began with the title character’s commission to a psychiatric hospital at the end of the fifth season. Since then we’ve seen Chase murder an African dictator, House start a relationship with boss and fan-favourite Lisa Cuddy,  Cuddy end a relationship with House, House fall back in to heavy Vicodin use, House marry an immigrant so she can get her green-card and House drive his car in to Cuddy’s front room. Alex proudly displays his Avenue tee and stickers

For many people running a business is all about meetings, suits – meetings about suits and rushing around frantically as stock prices tumble, if recent financial news is anything to go by at any rate. However, if you had a good chat with Alex Lamb, who has recently set up a skating brand of clothing and accessories, you would soon find that it can be as simple as a spreadsheet, some sound parental advice and a good network of friends to support you.

Alex’s brand, Avenue, was created in the October of 2011. “I have always wanted to run my own skate shop in the UK somewhere,” he says. Soon after, the first pieces of Avenue’s designs were laid down and a business plan was set out; listing the things he wanted the business to stand for was an important part in the creation process. He says that a big part of Avenue’s early success is the use of high-quality products and materials in the items that he sells. Read more

Student transportation: A pressing issue

This is a caricature of a young driver and is purely for illustrative purposes

Transportation is fast becoming a huge problem for the global population. Petrol prices are forever being inflated world-wide and greater taxes are levied in attempts by governments to discourage people using their own, personal, vehicles to get around. In the UK this is not working as well as intended, thanks to overly expensive bus and train fares it is often the better (and sometimes even safer) option to take the hit on your wallet and continue to drive a car. With petrol touching the £1.40 mark in most of the UK and insurance for young drivers sitting at around £3,000 for a 10 year old Fiesta, students are feeling the crunch as much as anyone.

A car at university though can have a huge impact on social lives and general quality of living. Having to rely on buses can be a bit of a drag and that’s just when they’re on time.  Often, in Falmouth at least, they run late and leave users tearing their hair out in despair. Read more

How to fix: Schooling – a whistle-stop tour

a generic image of school people

Having been back at university for three weeks now I’ve been reading a lot. One book was ‘It’s Your Time You’re Wasting’ by a chap using the pseudonym of Frank Chalk. Having read that book I can now tell you, from my big and safe ivory tower, that schools are screwed. But it’s ok guys, I’ve got a plan.

It would all start aged four. Young children would go to a school (called a primary school) and here they would stay for seven years. In these primary schools they would learn basic maths, English, grammar, basic French and do some light exercise every day. If these young children were, for some reason, falling behind or were not developing correctly teachers would spend extra time with them to ensure that they did not stay behind and get lost in the wilderness of life. They would not be shunned and they would not be forgotten. Read more

The Apprentice street food for thought

his name is Duane Bryan

This is the moment Duane realises he has a first name as a last name.

Having missed the last three episodes of BBC One’s The Apprentice I was mighty surprised when I saw that smooth talking Duane Bryan had been eliminated last week. The time for mourning, however, comes after the show, as Lord Sugar interrupts the remaining Candidates on their day off.

Greeted with an “all right, Lord Sugar?” the groups are informed they will be in Edinburgh to sell gourmet street food. The rules are simple; whoever makes the most money wins. Whoever doesn’t will face some choice words and over-blown guff in the boardroom before being fired. Read more

How to fix: Guernsey

This week I was sent an email asking some political questions from someone wanting to know the difference between Cornish and Guernsey politics. Because my knowledge of Cornish politics is ashamedly low I wasn’t all that much help, but I did offer a few insights in to the politics of my home island. It’s not often that I actually write down my cohesive thoughts so I thought I’d post them here to prove that I can actually think. Sometimes. Read more

Academy group financial fail

Released today: The investigation in to finances at The Priory Federation of Academies Trust

A prestigious network of educational academies have found themselves embroiled in an expenses scandal following the publication of an internal report.

The investigation report in to the finances of the Priory Federation of Academies Trust, released this afternoon (April 27), contains the findings of a Department for Education Internal Audit team and implicates members of staff of serious misconduct and misuse of Priory Federation resources, including former CEO Richard Gilliland.

In a statement posted on the Federation’s website, Chairman Terry Coffey has stated his regret to the parents and students.

“I apologised to parents and colleagues in a previous letter and I would like to extend that apology here. The work undertaken by the students and staff is genuinely impressive at every level; I fear you have been let down.” Read more

The curse of the Internet username

First World Problems girl couldn't get the username she wanted and hasn't stopped crying since

Everyone has an Internet user ID. One or two for email accounts, one for Facebook, and another for Twitter. You’ll have IDs for Amazon and eBay and LoveFilm and a whole host of other websites and services that you don’t even remember signing up to. This is causing an online identity crisis.

As of December 2011 there are just over two billion people with an Internet connection and there is no way that each individual can have the exact user ID they want without it having been taken already. The number of times I’ve seen USERNAME IS ALREADY TAKEN YOU BASTARD is uncountable, and depressing and I can’t even begin to imagine how many of these IDs are unused and unloved. Read more

Farewell to FOX favourite – House

Mourn with me internet, for today is a sad day. The-powers-that-be behind the FOX network’s “House” have decided that the eighth season will be the last.

This is bad for many people. Fans of the show, fans of Hugh Laurie… Hell, even wannabe doctors. I feel like I’ve learnt enough medical stuff to competently transplant a liver AND do that thing with the electricity.

In a statement released earlier today the executive producers for the programme confirmed what has long been on the cards. Read more

Student finances

Why is this pig wearing a hat?

Spending the last 20 minutes lying silently in my uni bed listening to the flatmates in the corridor outside discuss the various drugs they have taken, the drugs they wish to take and the drugs they will never, ever, take has set me apondering: how do students manage their money?

Now, technically, I’m not from the UK. I’m a dirty foreigner so I don’t have a firm grasp of how student finances work when controlled by Her Majesty’s Government, but from what I have gleaned from the odd over-heard conversation is something like this: Every term, a student gets £2,000 and they spend it on drink, drugs and the occasional trip to the bookies and then, when they eventually earn money after university, they pay it back. Slowly. Read more
